Rules are SAME as last year! 

Starting Lineup (5SP, 3RP) and Eligibility rules* are same as last year. 

NEW: *All Pitchers now  tagged with  (dummy position) P. 

1) Players tagged eligible with just: P are either rookies or cup  o'coffee guys from last season who have not met minimum appearances for eligibity at SP or RP. 

a) Pitchers with only the P  tag/position may still serve as one of your active 5 SP or 3 RPs....  True Rookies can start at their one Obvious position while in minors, either RP or SP.

b) Rookie Ps with just a few games of ML B experience - but not enough.for eligibility - may start  where they have a majority of appearances (SP or RP).. If appearances are tied 1-1 or 2-2, owner may choose either RP or SP.

c) You will use P position to put Newbies into your starting lineup as either SP or RP....   Both You and Commissioner will be aware if your P is actually an SP or RP....   Each owner can either figure this out for themselves or else contact commish to confirm what is correct.

HITTER POSITION ELIGIBILITY AT THE NEW UT

Just as P has been added as dummy position for all Pitchers, UT is the new dummy position for all Hitters.

If a Hitter has UT as his only eligiblie position, he did not meet the minimum of 10 Games Played at any one position in 2017.

Owners may start a UT (with zero mlb games) at his one Obvious and Primary position in the Minors. 

Owners may start a UT (with Some mlb games, but Less han minimum to qualify) at the one position where he has accrued most appearances.

You will enter him into your lineup as a UT, but it will be "known" that owner has either employed the player correctly or asked for guidance.

New Bottom Bracket System Embraces Ressurections and 3-Somes.

1) No word from the top bracket teams CF or PP so it's default seed matchups for the week-long series beginning tonight.

Reminder, the lineup you set tonight can be adjusted, later, for the Fri-Sun portion of this semifinal round.

2) Proposed for NEXT YEAR (provided we dont expand/contract owners):

*Seeds 4 and 5 still meet for the top bracket weekend play-in round. 

*Seed 6 still gets weekend bye and choice of semifinal, low-bracket foe.

*Seed 7 still gets weekend bye to the low-bracket semifinals.

Changes:

* The Loser of the 4/5 weekend High-Bracket Play-in would now go directly to Low-Bracket, week-long semifinals. This is revised due to pretty overwhelming popular demand, despite commish objection :(

* The Low-Bracket, weekend playoff would now be a 3-some (much to the delight of our e.d. sponsor). Seeds 8-9-10 will now be a Troika competition, with the weekend Hi-Scorer advancing to the semifinals of the Lo-Bracket.

Analysis/Origin:

This proposal is about 75-80% from Kennys suggestion, as he was the one who brought this issue to the table. Kennys proposal put 7th-10th in the low-bracket play-in. My tweak was to make this 8th-10th, preserving some value and competition for the 7th seed...  Its not that I care a lick about seeds 7-10; however, anything that creates some tangible reason for bottom seeds to win the final few series, is Good for the Top Teams in the Pennant race.

I strongly prefer to leave the brackets as they are because its the best thing for the Top, Pennant-contending teams... I would even be eager to allow Seeds 4/5 to choose top bracket weekend play-in OR swapping places with a Lo-Bracket team that has no weekend play-in. 

I think doing anything to potentially compromise the top teams pennant race is a move in the wrong direction.  

I may be right. I may be wrong, but I am most definitely in the Minority!

This change would seem to address the concerns about early weekend exits for the 4th/5th seed and allow them to keep on competing vs bottom feeders.  Agree? Object.

Rookie RP/SP Eligibility as Illustrated (in progress) by Tyler Pill

1) SP/RP Eligibility 1.1:  The Tyler Pill Saga continues

Pill is a great example of a rookie whose eligibility is in flux, Check it out:

a) Pill was an SP in minors so his eligibility BEFORE debuting in MLB was SP only.

b) Pill made his debut at RP, which then changed his eligibility to RP only.

c) Pill's next appearance was at SP, so his eligibility changed to SP and RP.

d) Right now Pill has 1 appearance at RP and 2 appearances at SP.

As soon as he gets to 3 appearances at either slot, his eligibility will change, again!, to either SP or RP only.

e)  Given that Mets are adding two starters this week and Pill has struggled, it seems likeliest that if he stays in MLB, he is going hit 3 appearances at RP first... 

f) If/when this happens, I will have to Manually Remove Pill's eligibility at SP.  The system can automatically add eligibility, but it doesnt automatically take away eligibility...  

g) If I dont catch the change and make it manually, the Onus is on Pill's owner to check his Eligibility...  If I can keep tabs on the whole league, each owner can keep tabs on the 1 or 2 players you might have who are similar to Pill.

RP/SP ELIGIBILITY ENFORCEMENT TO BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.

This is sent just for the record and to have some documentation on the rules, especially those affecting pitchers with very few mlb games.

Ok, we've given plenty of running start for folks to get acclaimated to the eligibility requirement for SP/RP.  From the set-lineup page its very easy to view last years and this years appearances at fielding positions or GS (Games Started).  The system will, typically, automatically react when a Veteran achieves the minimum appearances to obtain eligibility. But system is not perfect so know your players... Nobody has more than a handful of players to keep an eye on and it literally takes two seconds from the set lineup page to check eligibility, so do it or face the consequences.
If you have questions about your guys, ideally, you can look up the data, but if there is confusion dont hesitate to contact Ted.

If a player is found in your starting lineup at an ineligible position after lineup deadline, that player will always be replaced, first, by an eligible player who is least likely to score points. DL-injured players and minor leaguers, will be the first choice to replace an ineligible starter. Beyond that the ineligible player gets replaced by the eligible active mlb player who has the least points in current season.  The league will be notified of any such adjustments but they will be Inputted Directly according to the following critera and not owner discretion.

SP/RP/BOTH eligibility requirements:
Either 5 appearances in previous season or 3 appearances in current season.

ROOKIES/MLB DEBUTS/ PLAYERS WITH LESS THAN MINIMUM APPEARANCES

1- Completely Virgin MLB players qualify Only at their primary position in the minor leagues.

2- Once a "virgin" appears in a game he is eligible at any position where he appears, UNTIL HE MEETS the Minimum to qualify at one position. So if Tyler Pill makes his debut at RP and then his next appearance is at SP, he qualifies for both RP and SP.  But as soon as he hits 3 appearances at SP, his RP eligiblity is Gone until he racks up 3 slots there.

3- The most common error in SP/RP lineup issues is that a new player loses eligibility as described above. The System does not always automatically remove Eligibility in cases like Pill, decribed above.

4- IT IS RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH OWNER TO MONITOR AND CONFIRM ELIGIBILITY OR BE EXPOSED TO THE REPLACEMENT SYSTEM ABOVE.

99% of the time, eligibility goes on Auto Pilot. The exceptions are nearly always players with very little mlb experience, so there are not many guys to watch and its very easy to get the numbers.

Position players' eligibility follows the same guidelines for new players; however the guidelines are 10games previous season/ 5 games current instead of the 5/3 games for pitchers.

Juan Nicasio April 26th, 2017, to Have and to Hold?

Something called Baseball Info Solutions (BIS) is our site's stat provider. It appears they generate their own content(?)   They are Not feeding a Hold for Nicasio on April 26th. Stats Inc is also Not feeding a hold.

But mlb.com and espn.com DO both record a Hold for Nicasio on the 26th. 

Hey, Is this a Hold spot? Damn thats my hand not my phone.

Ultimately we have never varied from a ruling by our site's provider, But I would like to know that they do acknowledge their discrepancy with mlb/espn.com and can confirm why the discrepancy exists. 

I assume it is because an argument can be made that Nicasio was (inherently) not able to get a save.  One of the definitions of a hold is that it has to be a save situation. In this case Nicasio entered the game with the lead in the 4th inning.  In order to get a Save he would have had to pitch the next 4.3 innings and hold the lead. But the reality is if he actually did that, the official scorer would certainly make him the winning pitcher. In my opinion, Nicasio never had a real chance at a save or a hold - just a win.

The Hold "statistic " has lot of quirks, oddities and inconsistencies.  In my opinion, this is yet another one of them. 

This excellent espn commentary on HOLDS addresses the issue we are current facing.

Im focusing on this issue not only because this decision affects a game in the standing between phinests/ballbusters on april 27th...but also to emphasize that our policy, out of simplicity, is to go with what the site offers statistically.  I would like to confirm that the issue has been or is being considered.

And finally, our standard spiel about stat corrections:

In 22 years of doing this, we've rarely gone a full week, much less a full month, without there being some errors in the stats provided by our supplier (regardless of who that supplier may be -- we currently use Baseball Info Solutions, who supplies stats to a large number of large web sites and MLB teams, etc). When errors (or changes in the official scoring) occur, they are always caught and corrected by BIS, who then notifies us. After we're notified of a change, we will then (and only then) correct the stats and standings of all our leagues. We have elaborate procedures and protocols in place for handling this.Please note that even if we had been personally present at a game and had witnessed an unforgettable performance -- like a perfect game -- that didn't show correctly in the next day's stat report, we would not make a hand correction to our stat database until after we heard from BIS. It is absolutely paramount that we keep our stat data base in synch with BIS's.
So if you run across any errors in the standing and stat reports, please don't email us about it -- we wouldn't do anything about it until we got the updated data from BIS (which we always do -- usually the next day) anyway.
